The Complete Guide to Rose Gold

Rose Gold

Rose gold is a distinctive and elegant precious metal recognized for its warm, romantic color, which ranges from a subtle blush to a richer reddish-pink. Like yellow and white gold, rose gold begins with pure gold and is combined with other metals to improve its strength and durability. Its characteristic color comes primarily from the addition of copper, which introduces the warm reddish tones that distinguish rose gold from other gold alloys.

The precise color of rose gold depends on both its gold purity and the composition of its alloy. Increasing the proportion of copper generally produces a deeper, warmer rose color, while alloys containing more pure gold tend to display a softer golden warmth. Unlike white gold, rose gold does not require rhodium plating to achieve its characteristic appearance, as its color extends throughout the metal itself.

14K Rose Gold

14K rose gold contains 58.5% pure gold, with the remaining portion composed primarily of copper along with other alloying metals. Its relatively high copper content typically gives 14K rose gold a more pronounced pink or reddish hue than 18K rose gold, creating a warm and distinctive appearance.

The additional alloying metals also contribute to the strength and durability of 14K rose gold. Because copper is a relatively strong alloying metal, 14K rose gold is well suited to jewelry intended for frequent wear, including engagement rings and wedding bands. Its combination of durability, distinctive color, and gold content makes it a practical and attractive choice for everyday fine jewelry.

18K Rose Gold

18K rose gold contains 75% pure gold, with copper and other metals comprising the remaining portion of the alloy. Its higher gold content generally produces a softer, more refined rose color with greater underlying golden warmth compared with the deeper pink tones often associated with 14K rose gold.

Although somewhat softer than 14K rose gold due to its higher proportion of pure gold, 18K rose gold offers an appealing balance of precious-metal content, durability, and color. Its warm, sophisticated tone pairs particularly well with diamonds and complements a wide variety of skin tones, making it a distinctive choice for engagement rings, wedding bands, and other fine jewelry.
